Neche, N.D., man arrested for DUI after crash on I-29

PEMBINA, N.D. -- A Neche, N.D., man has been charged with driving under the influence after he rear-ended a vehicle on Interstate 29 Friday night, Feb. 15, near Pembina, the North Dakota Highway Patrol said in a news release.

Alan Winkler, 24, of Neche was driving south on I-29 in a 1995 Chevrolet pick up when he rear-ended a 2017 Kenworth truck tractor with trailer driven by Dale Swanson, 69 of Thompson, the report said. Swanson was also traveling south on the interstate at the time.

The crash occurred around 8 p.m. Friday, 1 mile north of Pembina, N.D.

The vehicle was pinned under the rear of the semi-trailer trapping both occupants in the pick up, the report stated. Both vehicles were damaged and remained on the roadway resulting in a nearly three-hour closure of southbound I-29, according to the report.

Alan Winkler and his passenger, Jennifer Winkler, 43, of Pembina, sustained serious injuries, according to the NDHP. Swanson was uninjured.

Alan Winkler was charged with driving under the influence, the report stated.

According to the accident report, Alan Winkler and Jennifer Winkler were not wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash.

The crash remains under investigation by the North Dakota Highway Patrol.
